Venice is a small city-state floating on the sea, it is nicknamed the "City of Water".
Venice's maritime industry has long been prosperous and controls a monopoly position on the profits of the Mediterranean pepper trade from Alexandria. Recently however, the Ottoman Empire appeared in the East and Portugal discovered a sea route to the Indies, threatening Venitian profits.
