This page is a work in progress and additional information is being added.

Basic Information[]

Shipbuilding is the crafting skill which allows you to build customized ships at a fraction of the cost of NPC ships. Shipbuilding must be done at an NPC, rather than anywhere using a book, like other crafting skills.

When constructing your own ship you can choose the material it will be made out of, as well as modify the ship's hold.

Once construction begins, you must leave the port and sail on the seas for a set number of days (setting sail and sitting in the harbor qualifies for this), after which your constructed ship will be available to pick up at any ship master.

How to acquire the skill and Job[]

SKILL: There are two methods to acquiring skills, and Shipbuilding is no exception.

The first method is to train the prerequisites.

To meet the prerequisites you must have a character with Battle level of 7 and a Repair skill level of 3. Once you've met these two requirements the skill can be trained for 25,000 Ducats in one of three ports: Tunis in Western Europe, Istanbul in Turkey, and Calicut in India. The Maritime GM in each of these ports will train the skill.

The second method is to change to a job which features Shipbuilding as a favoured skill.

There are 4 jobs that feature Shipbuilding as a favored skill; a trader Arms Dealer, a battle Shipwright, a battle Tactician, and a battle Guardian.  By switching to one of these jobs you can train the skill at any Maritime GM.

JOB: To acquire the Shipwright job so you have the expert shipbuilding skill (Rank+1) you will need to do the following:

1. Have rank 7 tactics skill (note: 5+2 works)

2. Have Spanish and English language skills (note body language skill works)

3. Go to Lisbon Maritime Guild with about 20 Quest Mediation Permits to be safe

4. Use QMP until you see the "Latest tactics" quest pop up, then aquire it

5. All within the 120 day deadline:

  • Speak with the Naval Officer in:
  • Seville outside the maritime guild.
  • Marseilles outside the maritime guild.
  • London outside the maritime guild.
  • Amsterdam outside the maritime guild.
  • Venice outside the maritime guild.

(note: It does not matter in which order they are done)

How to Level[]

Of course, getting the shipwright or other shipbuilding job is essential. You will be spending a LOT of money building ships. Halve that money by having it as a favored skill.

WHAT to build

The best method to level is to build low level ships until r3 shipbuilding.  It really doesn't matter what ship you build at this point - the skill points you gain are based on the ship's total level and construction duration.

At r3 (r1+2, r2+1, or flat r3) move on to Beirut (speaking Arabic is helpful.)  Here you will be building Dhows from r3 until r6.  These are the most cost effective and highest skillups you can get until Cutters.

At r6 (r4+2, r5+1, or flat r6) you can start building Cutters. This method will not make any profit as most players will not buy them, but it is the fastest and most cost effective way of ranking up Shipbuilding until very late level Sambuks (r13 and above).  It has the advantage of being available for production in many European ports so you will not have to travel far to make one. Cutters can be built in Amsterdam, London, Hamburg, Lisbon, Seville, Marseilles, Genoa, Naples, and Venice.  Alternatively, if you belong to a company that has a North America colony with a rank 2 shipyard and over 3000 colony population, you can build Schooners as a significantly faster way to level.

At r9 (r7+2, r8+1, or flat r9) you may start building Sambuks. You need to sail to East Africa, Arabia or India to construct them, and a teak Sambuk will sell for a decent price.  This is the first ship you can really potentially make money on. Of course, dragging them back to Europe will take a long time. Some players may decide to make a few at a time and sell as they go, but keep in mind that at higher levels you will need to make many Sambuks per rank.

Detailed Calculations[]

Skill experience is gained upon construction start according to the following formula

EXP gain formula = (total ship sail requirement level + days of construction) x 8.5 ÷(Shipbuilding rank+1)

*All decimals are truncated down to the closest integer.

Total exp needed per skill rank = (current base skill rank ^ 2) * 10 This formula applies to all favored skills in UWO. Unfavored skills require double the amount from the above formula

Rank Favored Unfavored
R1 to R2 100 200
R2 to R3 400 800
R3 to R4 900 1,800
R4 to R5 1,600 3,200
R5 to R6 2,500 5,000
R6 to R7 3,600 7,200
R7 to R8 4,900 9,800
R8 to R9 6,400 12,800
R9 to R10 8,100 16,200
R10 to R11 10,000 Not Applicable
R11 to R12 12,100 Not Applicable
R12 to R13 14,400 Not Applicable
R13 to R14 16,900 Not Applicable
R14 to R15 19,600 Not Applicable
R15 to R16 22,500 Not Applicable

Schooner /Cutter/ Sambuk Important factors to consider:

1. Ducats

  • Cutters have a 60,000 loss per build
  • Sambuks have a 100,000 loss per build
  • Schooners have a 102,000 loss per build

2. Raw time waiting for ship to build at sea (not including port time)

  • 1 Cutter takes 8 days to build
  • 1 Sambuk takes 12 days to build
  • 1 Schooner takes 6 days to build

Grand Total Calculations Rank 1~7 to 16 ShipBuilding: (only Favored SB Skill is calculated)

  • Building only Dhows r1-16 = 226.2M total loss of Ducats and 629 hrs 12 (not including port time)
  • Building only Cutters r6-16 = 239.1M total loss of Ducats and 539 30 min starting from r6 (not including port time)
  • Building only Schooners r6-r16 = 447.6M total loss of Ducats and 439 hrs 6 min starting from r6 (not including port time)

The Cost-effective build would be to build cutters and just take the 60k loss if you are not worried about ranking Shipbuilding Skill that fast .

The most experience-efficient or fastest way to level Shipbuilding is done by buidling Schooners. However this is also the most expensive  and intensive way as well. Building Schooners takes considerable amount of focus and energy with only a 6 min wait so it is very hard to get a break. A lot of times Shipbuilders will over-shoot or over-wait the required (6 day build) time because they like to be afk.

The longest and most afk (away from keyboard) focused build would be the Sambuk. This is the most traditional route for shipbuilders but according to calculations it is the most misinformed route too due to the new Schooner ship. Many Shipbuilders prefer to be afk and the 12 min wait accompanies this afk style. However, if you are a more involved player, then you should build Schooners because you can build 2 Schooners for every 1 Sambuk (2 Schooners or 1 Sambuk takes 12 days). Sambuks are not cheap like Cutters. So the only reason to like Sambuks is the afk part of it. Because if you are in it for the xp then Schooners are the answer.

Beginning Shipbuilding[]

To build a ship, you must be in a port that has a Shipyard Master.

There are TWO constraints on which ships can be built. You can build ships that the character could not sail with. The constraints are your shipbuilding level, this constraint will be explained further below, and the size and nationality of the port, which will determine which ships would be available to be built.

Ship Type Areas where ship can be built
Caravel, Carrack, Galleon Europe, Africa, Kishi Kita (up to grade small galleon)
Cog, Hooker, Flute North Sea-Region
Pinnace

Amsterdam, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Lubeck, Stockholm

Galley Mediterranean region, Calais
Flanders Galley Amsterdam, Groningen, Antwerp
Buss, La Reale Marseilles Mediterranean east (north)
Barbarian Galley Mediterranean east of Algiers (south), Istanbul
Dhow Arabic-speaking, Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia
Arabian Galley Indian Ocean (west)
Sambuk, Xebec Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia

Construction Details[]

Once you have found a port that handles the type of ship you want to built, you can begin its construction.

First Selection[]

The first screen is similar as to the one for purchasing a new ship from an NPC, except you will notice there is a construction time listed.

Second Selection[]

The second screen will allow you to choose which type of wood you wish to make the ship from, these are typically a compromise between speed, durability, and cost.

Material Durability Sails Price Rank Remarks
Cedar 94% 104% 100% 1 Basic Material
Red Pine 97% 102% 100% 1 Europe Material

Third Selection[]

The third construction page will allow you to change the cargo capacity of the ship. Within the middle ranges, which are labeled as "Effective Range" a change from the minimum to maximum will only affect the cargo hold size. Once you leave the effective range, you will impact sail performance, turning speed, row power (if applicable) and wave resistance, as well as increase the cost of the ship.

Fourth Selection[]

Finally you can name the deed you are about to produce, you will see a summary page, and clicking complete will charge your account (you must have the money on you) and begin construction.

Construction[]

Keep in mind that days only pass while at sea, so if a ship requires 10 days, you must spend 10 days at sea before it will be complete. Once the construction period is finished, the ship deed can be picked up at any Shipyard Master, it doesn't have to be the one you originally placed the order with.

Shipbuilding Levels[]

The ships that are able to be built is based on the ships required levels combined. For instance, a ship that requires 0 adventure, 17 trade, and 10 battle, is just as hard to build as one that requires 8 adventure, 11 trade, 8 battle. (Buildable ship's total level =< (Shipbuilding level x 5) + 9))

Adjusting cannon chambers and cabins[]

You can redesign your ship by talking to the shipwright if your Shipbuilding Rank is 5 or higher and your level is high enough to use the ship of your choice. When you redesign your ship, you can adjust the ratio of cannon chambers, cabins, and storage within the total volume of the ship.

Free Style Shipbuilding[]

FS Shipbuilding Overview[]

<work in progress>

The Free style shipbuilding is a sort alike way to built ships. This is where you built separate shipparts such as hull's, sails, ... in order to adjust them immediately to your ship under construction. This way ships may be more personalized as preferred by it's new owner. Durability, speed, cargo, cannon hold, etc. can all be manipulated this way. Even special ships can be built (beside the classic NPC models).
